The Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) was launched by Government of India on 2nd October 2014. The Mission is implemented by the Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD) and covers all statutory cities and towns and achieves the objective of providing sanitation and household toilet facilities across India, and drive to 100% Open Defecation Free households by 2nd October, 2019.

SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT (SWM) (DOOR TO DOOR COLLECTION): Door to Door collection is going on in 15 wards by SHG including market area & Segregation is not done yet as place of Dumping ground/landfill site has some issues. At present in Barpeta Gandhinagar, ward no 15, MRF (Material Recovery Facility) has constructed which is used by Barpeta Municipal Board as temporary waste disposal site.
The new Dumping Ground has to be developed scientifically along with earth filling, fencing and gate. Area:
SWM PLAN-LAND STATUS
A plot of land measuring four Bigha has been identified land for solid waste management (SWM) at GanakKuchi Town ,Ward No 21 under Dag no 1318 for Barpeta Municipal Board . Out of the four Bigha, two Bigha land has been marked for Sewerage Treatment Plant(STP) by the Municipal Board
TEMPORARY DUMPING GROUND
At present in Barpeta Gandhinagar, ward no 15, a temporary dumping ground is usedby Barpeta Municipal Board & as temporary waste disposal site.
A summary of Solid Waste Management running under Barpeta Municipal Board:
- Total wards (current): 22
- Door to Door collection is running in 15 wards.
- Segregation is not done yet as place of Dumping ground/landfill site has some issues.
- Dry waste are collected by Municipal Board.
- In commercial wards awareness is being done to aware people to segregate waste. Leaflets on segregation, fine etc. are distributed as well as twin dustbins (Green and Blue) to the shops.
PLASTIC WASTE MANAGEMENT:
Single use plastic below 75 micron has been banned. Drive against single use of plastic below 75 micron was carried out at Barpeta MB and total fine of Rs.80,500/- has been collected from different shops who have violated the order.
